I use css as a style for color, font, etc. I was unaware of its capability to make a tableless page with the same format as a table page. Looks like I have to dig deeper.

I just started learning CSS about a week or two ago. I always just used tables until I found out reading a CSS tutorial that tables are considered an "invalid" part of HTML and should only be used for displaying data not web page layouts.

So far since I've started learning CSS I've found it can be a bit difficult figuring out how to do layouts and displaying them properly, but the code is cleaner and I don't have to keep typing <td> and <tr> and all that. There is a lot of options when designing with CSS so I recommend it. I don't think it really saves loading time but I think its still a good web language.

The problem with css there are many places that have not upgraded their browsers for current css standards. I found this out going to businesses to do presentations. Over a third were not able to view current css.

Definately CSS. Smaller pages, smaller files, quicker page loads, and less code for the SE spiders to crawl through.

I'm in the process of changing 2 sites from tables to non-table and it is a pain in the butt.

Whilst table based designs may be easier to code for some people, the CSS based designs are better in many ways:
- Uses less bandwidth
- Search engines like them, less HTML to parse to find your content
- Easier to update your sites in future
- Layouts are usually rendered faster by the browser

You should not stop using tables altogether though, tabular data should use tables, don't try re-creating that in divs.
Yes...you’re correct lisbum..since a well known programmer for third party programs told me this...tables are useful when listing stuff.

By the way, I still don’t know why people are still using Explorer when it is no longer supported...and there are problems with it because of that I was told to use Opera, Firefox (which is now the standard) and Safari.

Firefox is not really the standard still. I use Firefox and I really love it, but the market share of Firefox users is still a lot below IE users. And anyway I think CSS is the way to go, although some functions (eg :hover) are not compatible on IE.

Totally agree, tables serve a purpose - formatting data. I've seen data tables and such being done in CSS and just shake my head, in the end coding a crap load of divs is a lot more work than a single, clean table just to list some statistics....

I was recently Stumbling, and came across this great tool:

Web Page Layout Grid | Smiley Cat Web Design

It's a (temporary) background image that will help you place your CSS elements where you want them to go.
